They suffer decay due to the effects of certain bacteria.

Until recently, it was thought that the decaying bacterium was only Streptococcus mutans. Researchers held that this microbe was the leading cause of cavities, as it’d cling to teeth and erode enamel. The other 700+ strains of bacteria in your mouth would thus be largely blameless; they’d simply be benign microbes living on your teeth, tongue, and gum pockets.

The New Bacteria Discovery

Of course, science still holds that Streptococcus mutans causes tooth decay. It’s just that scientists now see another kind of bacteria as a source of cavities as well.

This conclusion was made by researchers from the University of Pennsylvania and the University of North Carolina. In a 2023 study by these scholars, it was found that bacteria called Selenomonas sputigena also decay teeth. These microbe even amplifies Streptococcus mutans’ ability to cause cavities.

How to Prevent Tooth Decay

Several bacteria are now known to decay teeth, so you’ll need to prevent cavities as best you can. Just make sure to do the following:

Keep Your Mouth Clean – If you brush twice daily, floss once daily, and rinse often, you’ll remove tooth-decaying bacteria from your mouth.

Eat Less Sugar – Since sugar attracts harmful oral bacteria, try to avoid sweets and treats. Instead, eat “mouth-healthy” foods like lean proteins, leafy greens, and dairy products.

Drink Plenty of Water – Make sure to drink lots of water, as it washes food debris and plaque from your mouth.

Get Dental Checkups – You should see your dentist every six months for dental checkups and cleanings. That way, your dentist can treat early signs of decay before they spread.

New bacteria are linked to tooth decay, so don’t be careless with your grin. Make sure to keep your teeth safe from all cavity-causing microbes!

About the Practice

Second Line Family Dentistry is based in Metairie, LA.
